Oma Gill…..

“What defines an athlete is not necessarily the ability to play the big shots, but the ability to produce them on the big stage, when it really matters. Many athletes have the skills, and therefore the potential to win an event, but it is a rare and precious ability to control the nerves and be inspired to new heights, rather than being inhibited by the overwhelming weight and pressure imposed by the desire to succeed.

There are countess examples in sport – golfer Tiger Woods in his prime, tennis player Roger Federer, and in #badminton Lin Dan exemplified this rare and precious ability. Despite winning less than half the number of Superseries titles than his friend and rival Lee Chong Wei, Lin Dan’s record in the big tournaments is unequalled, 2 x Olympic Gold, 2 x Asian Games Gold, and 5 x world champion.

Although not as widely recognised, or prolific in their achievements, Lee Yang and Wang Chi Lin also possessed that ability to raise their performance when it really mattered to levels seldom exhibited in other, less important matches or tournaments. Something which is illustrated by their remarkable record.

● They never lost a #WorldTour final at 500 or above (equivalent to a Superseries).
● The first men’s doubles pair to win titles at #WTFinals, 1000, 750, 500 and 300 level.
● And the first men’s doubles PAIR to win 2 consecutive Olympic Golds.

The fact that they only won one title between their two #Olympic Golds, highlights their ability to rise to the occasion, to produce their best on the biggest and most important sporting stage of all.

Following the conclusion of the #TaipeiOpen2024, Lee Yang leaves the world stage. As a player he was brilliant on the front court, and a master of the rarely used crouch defence. As a personality he was always respectful and even self-effacing.

I, like many, am sad to see him go, but Lee Yang leaves a legacy. His partnership with Wang Chi Lin has inspired a generation of men’s doubles players from Chinese-Taipei – on the world rankings published today they have 14 pairs in the top 100, which is equal to Indonesia (8) and Denmark (6) combined.

Happy retirement Lee Yang.
