Dr Tai Tzu Ying

“Happy birthday to the Queen, (Dr) Tai Tzu Ying! 

The 20th of June marks her 29th birthday. The former World No. 1 from Kaohsiung City, Taiwan, is set to participate in Taipei Open 2023, which begins today. 

Dr Tai Tzu Ying debuted at the age of 15 in 2009, and three years later, in 2012, she won the Japanese Super Series tournament as the youngest champion. Four years later, in 2016, her success brought her further in her career when she became the World No. 1 for the first time. 

Later, Dr Tai spent at least 200 weeks as the top Women’s Singles shuttler according to the BWF rankings, holding the title as the World No. 1 for a long time. She possesses unique skills and talents that have brought her far in her career. There is a video showcasing 50 different skills displayed by her. Meanwhile, as she continues to participate in tournaments, she also spends a significant amount of time studying. As the alma mater of the University of Taipei, Dr Tai completed her Bachelor’s, Master, and PhD in the same institution, becoming not only a professional in badminton but also in sports science. 

The news of Dr Tai completing her doctorate came in the mid of 2022. Her supervisor praised her for being a highly responsible and disciplined student despite being a full-time shuttler. To make achievements in both sports and studies requires a lot of effort, and that is what makes Dr Tai inspirational. 

As a personal take, Dr Tai remains a prominent figure and member of the F4 of Women’s Singles, alongside Akane Yamaguchi, An Se Young, and Chen Yu Fei. They have become the strongest contenders that many would like to overcome.
